How 4×4 Sudoku works

Fill the grid so every row, every column and each 2×2 box contains the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 exactly once. With only sixteen cells, you can usually finish with nothing but naked singles — cells where just one number fits. That makes it the clearest way to learn the one rule all Sudoku shares.

Why start small?

A 4×4 grid teaches the row/column/box rule without any of the scale that makes 9×9 intimidating. Once the pattern clicks here, step up to 6×6 and then the full 9×9. New to the rules entirely? Read how to play Sudoku first.
