Fill the grid so every row, every column and each 2×2 box contains the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 exactly once. With only sixteen cells, you can usually finish with nothing but naked singles — cells where just one number fits. That makes it the clearest way to learn the one rule all Sudoku shares.
- Digits 1–4 only — no big numbers, no maths.
- Great for children and total beginners; see Sudoku for kids.
- A gentle warm-up before the classic 9×9 grid.
Why start small?
A 4×4 grid teaches the row/column/box rule without any of the scale that makes 9×9 intimidating. Once the pattern clicks here, step up to 6×6 and then the full 9×9. New to the rules entirely? Read how to play Sudoku first.
Frequently asked questions

Yes — it's the format we recommend for ages 4 and up. Short, friendly and winnable, it builds the habit of scanning a grid for the one number that fits.
Can 4×4 Sudoku have more than one answer?
